What help is available?
In Brent 10.5 per cent of residents (23,210 people) are living with diabetes and are at risk of a range of complications (including heart disease, kidney disease and loss of sight) and 17 per cent of all deaths in Brent are attributable to diabetes.
Brent Council has funded the Diabetes UK community champions programme. The champions are 15 Brent residents who were recruited and trained as volunteers to educate and raise diabetes awareness in the community. For more information see the Diabetes UK website here.
The Brent Integrated Diabetes Service (BIDS) focusses on Type 2 diabetes patients in primary care and community settings, provides greater support to the GP practices in the borough. The service also offers intensive support for patients to self-manage their condition through the DESMOND (diabetes education and self-management for ongoing and newly diagnosed) programme and a greater emphasis on weight management and diet.
Commissioned by Brent CCG and provided by Brent Community Services (part of London North West Healthcare Trust), BIDS is accessible via your GP only.
For more information on this service, please see the London North West Healthcare Trust website here and speak to your GP.
